Regulations Governing the Institute for European Traffic Law Award 

Article 1: Purpose and aims of the Institute

Primarily within the framework of the European Union, the Institute for European Traffic Law (IETL) shall aim to serve research, the political decision-makers, the industry and the consumers in all matters of national and international traffic law and is dedicated to the promotion of academic research in the fields of insurance law, liability law, law on damages and traffic law throughout the European Union.

Article 2: Aims and funding of the IETL Award 

The Institute shall recognise the best doctoral dissertation with an award. The Institute shall set up a fund to finance the prizes awarded for the dissertations. The Institute shall call on sponsors to support this form of encouragement by making one-time or regular contributions to this fund.

The prize money of the IETL Award is €2,000. The prize shall be awarded during the annual European Traffic Law Days, taking place in October. 

Article 3:

Award conditions The IETL Award shall go to university postgraduates for a doctoral dissertation in the fields of liability law, law on damages and traffic law written within the last two years. The eligible dissertation must be of convincing quality, creativity and originality and make a contribution to the development of law. To meet the above criteria the dissertation must be dedicated to an innovative subject, be theoretically consistent and of high methodological quality.

 Article 4: Submission of candidacy 

The dissertations shall be submitted in triplicate by 1 July of each year. They must be accompanied by a Curriculum Vitae and a recommendation letter from an academic supervisor. This letter must be written in one of the Institute’s official languages (English, French, German or Italian).

Article 5: Procedural requirements

The dissertations and abstracts must be written in one of the Institute’s official languages (English, French, German or Italian). The abstracts must not exceed 10 pages. 

Article 6: Candidate selection

 The dissertation to be recognised shall be selected by an IETL jury designated by the Executive Committee.

The jury shall deliberate on the dissertations and recommendation letters submitted.

The Institute’s Academic Advisory Committee (AAC) shall evaluate the eligibility of the dissertations based on its free judgement and discretion. The IETL Board of Directors shall have the final authority on the Award. The IETL President shall communicate the decision to the author.

There shall be no legal recourse against this decision.

Article 7: Announcement and publication of the IETL Award

The winning dissertation shall be translated, as requested, into one of the IETL official languages indicated by the award winner and published permanently on the Institute’s website. The Institute shall adequately announce the attribution of the IETL Award and prize, primarily on its website. If feasible, the author shall indicate the attribution of the Institute Award and prize in the published dissertation.

The IETL Award shall not imply any transfer of intellectual property in the dissertation so recognised.
