Ethical framework for use of artificial intelligence in business includes transparency, accountability & respect for right to privacy

This briefing sets forth a framework of fundamental values and principles for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in business… Particular applications of AI include speech and face recognition and ‘driver-less’ vehicles… [T]he rise of artificial intelligence has brought about considerations including the level of control organisations can retain over their machines’ decision-making processes and how to ensure that the AI systems they adopt always act in a way that is in line with the organisation’s core values… [Risks include that] certain applications of the AI systems adopted might lead to ethical lapses; automation of jobs can lead to a deskilled labour force; black box algorithms can make it difficult to identify tampering and cyber-attacks; data privacy issues; [and] biased algorithms can lead to discriminatory impact. 

.. It is essential that companies know the impact and side effects that new technologies might have on their business and stakeholders… Measures that organisations can adopt to minimise the risk of ethical lapses due to an improper use of AI technologies [include:]… engage with third parties for the design of AI algorithms only if they commit to similar ethical standards…; empower people through specific training courses and communication campaigns in order to enable them to use AI systems efficiently, effectively and ethically…; [and] introduce ‘ethics tests’ for AI machines, where they are presented with an ethical dilemma.
